Another interesting, if rather retarded online conversation. I'm really lame in this conversation, but it's funny, nonetheless, and you'll see why. "orange army set to conquer- ORANJE" is Yi He while Andrew is me. Pretty obvious, but just to make sure no one's floundering. Oh, and by the way, if you can't really read the conversation, you'll need to change the encoding of the page to Unicode UTF-8. It's in Chinese, you see.

Ahh. Had Chinese O level today, and it didn't go too bad. Well it'd better not go bad, 'cause if I don't get my A1, I'm fked. I need my A1 for Chinese. Anyway, came home, sat my lazy ass down on a chair and Halo 2'ed for like, 2 hours? It's probably the longest I've ever played Halo 2 online, and when it was over, my ass was numb. Imagine that. Oh wait. Don't. Good news though is that I managed to up my Double Team level to 18 from 16 (not as easy as you think) and my Team Snipers level from 10 to 11 (only played like, 2 matches?).

Back to English again.

The following is a rather interesting conversation of Adrian with Kok Seng. Before I delve into anything however, I do feel that a short history of events is required, to actually comprehend the conversation itself.

Every year, our school holds an annual "Marist Youth Day", which is rather like a carnival but without rides and popcorn and whatever, and each class is required to come up with either a food stall or game stall for the benefit of everyone. Last year, our class 3C held a sucessful Halo 2 Tournament in which everyone had fun and prizes were cool (mind you, first prize was a Battlefield 2: Modern Combat computer game). Not over-the-budget expensive, mind you, but cool. Well then. This year, our class held a discussion in which I kept my mouth shut too see if anything better would come up. Cue in Kok Seng, our class chairman this year. Now before you start thinking that I'm going to lambast him with a ton of insults of which the words you haven't even heard of, let me set the record straight: I don't hate him, I just think he's rather sanctimonious. Other than that he's quite okay, I guess. Anyway back to the story. This year, as class chairman (Marcus was chairman last year), Kok Seng decides to take charge and goes up front asking for ideas. Again, nothing wrong with that, of course, except for the fact that he only wrote ideas that he himself thought were good, which was rather unfortunately in opposition to what the class thought was good. Hmmm.

One of the ideas proposed was having a Halo 2 tournament again (it wasn't me, but my disciple Muthu), but since the theme for this year's carnival was "Freaky Friday", it was kinda changed to Doom 3 with hidden connatations of changing the game to Halo 2 again at the very last minute. So, a number of lame ideas were put up of the board, along with the "Doom 3" idea, and we were supposed to take a vote. So yeah, ho-hum, except (again) that something really weird happened. Over-the-top, mind-boggling brain-squelching weird. What you say? Somewhere along the way, "Doom 3" disappeared off the whiteboard!! "Holy Shit!" everyone thought. For a moment, everyone thought thought the worst; could aliens have stolen the words away? Or was it that the words couldn't stand the scrutiny of everyone in the class and ran off? Or...okay, so Kok Seng rubbed it off the board without taking a vote, but you can't fault me for wanting to spice things up a little.

Everyone thought this was a joke, but I'll keep all those conversations out of this post. Suffice to say the class's idea now is extremely lame, and I harbour no hopes that this idea will be a success. Not to keep you in suspense anymore, here is the conversation in which Adrian confronted Kok Seng on MSN and of which I found rather interesting. It's VERY long, but rather hilarious nonetheless so do bear with me. "saved...no tuition but warning" is Adrian while David is Kok Seng.

(rofl he saved the best for last)

Well then, even if what Kok Seng said was true, that he erased the "Doom 3" idea because he thought it was a PC game, the least he could do was ASK me, the person who apparently shot myself in the foot by saying it was something unfeasible. Funny how a person's inclinations can lead to bad hearing, along with needing only the slightest reason to remove a good idea.

Heavy heart.

Head full of stress.

Procrastination to take the mind off the pain, if only for a while.

But after that while, the few moments of ignorant bliss, it all comes flooding back.

More poignant and keen these agonies are than they were before.

There's nothing I can do about it. Not now, but not forever.

I have to face the music.

I need to pick myself up.

It's time.

This post is not for fluffheads. You have been warned.

Who am I? The things in life that define a person: His friends, his talents, his character, what would he be without them? What would I be if the layers were peeled away, and all that's left is the very innermost core? It would be wrong in this case to say that I would be an "empty shell", because in this case I described these things as "layers", peeled on from the outside. A veneer, a facade? Of that I know not.

There are two ways of looking at the matter at hand. The things that define a person, aforementioned his friends, his character and everything else can be portrayed in two ways. One, these things can be intepreted as "layers", unwrapped from the outside. Two, these things can be intrepreted as the "core" of a person. Thus if I were to descirbe the things in life that describe a person as being his "core", then it would be correct in this case, then, to say that if I were to remove my "core", I would be nothing but an empty shell. I am not trying to obfuscate matters by typing barely coherent jargon, but sometimes the details, though impossible to undertand at first end up allowing the person who makes the effort to read and absorb every line, every sentence to have an even deeper understanding of the subject matter. It's like theology in Catholicism; the casual reader will never be able to understand all the jargon and dogma, but those who really want to understand the faith innately will make the effort to read and understand all of it. I digress somewhat from the original topic on this, but here is my point: Going into the details can knock the casual reader off his feet, but can allow those who want read some coherence into what I am saying to have an even deeper understanding of all of this.

To summarise what I have said thus far to allow the reader to digest, I am asking myself what perhaps is one of the most rhetorical questions mankind has faced, one that ranks among asking what our purpose on this earth is, one that is equivalent to asking why we live. Maybe there is no answer, but the debate goes on just the same. The question I am asking is who I really am underneath it all, or without the defining aspects of my core, depending on which viewpoint you take.

Who am I? What is is really like, to one day have everything taken away, when your friends aren't really your friends? When you have nothing left? Your personality, character taken away? Can it even be taken away? What if, one day each layer is slowly peeled away one by one, what would be left? The soul? If that is the case, then nothing really has been taken away except your body, after all, the soul is supposed to be your essence, is it not?

If the soul is your essence, then the expression that a person devoid of all things that defines him is an "empty shell" would not be correct, because a person who is an empty shell doesn't have a soul.

Who am I, then?

According to Wikipedia,

The National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) is the largest uniformed group for youths in Singapore in terms of membership. As of 31 March 2004, the organisation has 596 teacher officers and 20,146 student members in 155 secondary schools, 2 polytechnics open units and 2 University Open Units. With the support from two ministries, namely the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the organisation has grown from being a relatively new-comer compared to other uniformed groups, to being one of the more well-established in terms of reputation, standards, and acceptabilty amongst the youths of Singapore and their parents.

Also,

1997 – The most prestigious of the NPCC Badges - the SPF-NPCC Badge - was unveiled in 1997 and was awarded to 10 cadets in that same year during the NPCC Day Parade.

I don't know how Wikipedia gets so much of this kind of information, so much to the extent that you can probably find anything and everything there, but that's beside the point.

Anyway, according to a directive by the National Police Cadet Corps to "identify and recognise outstanding cadets with good leadership qualities". Every year, nominees from each unit are required to fill up a form indicating their achievements in NPCC, and this form will be sent directly to HQ for "rigorous screening". Only the top 1% of NPCC cadets are awarded this badge every year.

This year, our unit managed to clinch eight out of the hundred or so placings for recipients for this prestigious badge, compared with only 3 last year. Needless to say, I'm proud for the unit. Seven other of my squadmates, along with myself are scheduled to receive the badge in a presentation ceremony on June 7. Am I happy that I qualified for the most prestigious badge in NPCC, often hailed to be the pinnacle of achievements an NPCC cadet can attain? I guess so, but it really isn't sinking in yet, probably 'cause of my extremely poor results.

Again, I need to start studying. But not yet.

Don't have time to say much as I've tuition later.

We've gotten back all our results, and mine are totally shit. An L1R5 of 31 doesn't get me anywhere, and I'm thankful it's only Prelim 1. If it were Prelim 2, I'd be a goner, but effing hell, how did I got from being a pretty much A grade student to such a pathetic state? It never fails to surprise me, even though I know the answer. I've been lazy. Simply that, in 3 words. Oh, and my Math teacher doesn't help at all. I never got into the "exam mood" when the exams came, and I didn't even study for a couple of subjects. Sure, I topped the class again for English, but that's nothing anymore, and many people are catching up. An A2 for Chinese isn't too bad, and I agree, but an A1 was in my hands and it slipped.

I need to start studying. Soon. Well, maybe during the holidays. Whatever, but I know I can't afford to flunk anymore. I won't, for my own sake and not to disappoint my parents.

Played badminton with Bai Kar, SY, Muthu, Jing Feng, Lian Kai and a couple of others today. Had fun, and after that BK went with me to buy a new racket ^_^ - a "Muscle Power 23", bought it cause it is a pretty good racket after all, plus there were a couple of freebies, namely a badminton shirt and shorts and two wristbands, along with a badminton racket bag. Cost: $88.90 Worth it? I should think so...now all that remains is to test it on for the first time on Thursday, during PE. Went home after that, stoned for a while and took a nap. Don't normally sleep in the afternoons, but was really tired. Nothing else to report, I think, so I'll shut up now.

Shan't talk about exams no more. Life after the exams is always the light at the end of the tunnel, so...

Talk about 3 days straight of going out. On Thursday immediately after the exams it was off to play pool a bowl a couple of rounds with SY and many of my classmates, after which I "went" to Kbox where me and SY got freakin robbed. I don't understand what the hell is so fun about singing cutesy poppy songs in a karaoke room...the moment I saw the video on the TV screen, I almost puked. What was up with all the pink crap?! Anyway, the original plan was for me and SY to just go and say hello to my classmates at Kbox, but we didn't know that they counted entry on a per-head basis, so apparently we weren't just allowed to say hello and go. Ended up paying 15 bucks for sitting in the room...

Went to catch MI 3 on Friday at PS with Hao Bin, Bai Kar and a couple others, and there was like a ton of Marists there. Our whole row was occupied by Marists, and we counted about 4 different big groups of people from our school. Seems like we really love PS. Went to bowl a couple of rounds after that before going home.

Went for another class outing yesterday, this time to Marina Bay to have steamboat buffet. Apparently many of my classmates were expecting some Seoul Garden type BBQ feast, so they were pretty disappointed (refer to Muthu's blog for extent of disappointment). Reaching the place, we were touted by a couple of people from a particular restaurant, and apparently there was to be a hired bus to send us straight there. So we went. Bla Bla Bla...didn't eat much, was kinda bored, but one highlight of the dinner was the "live prawn incident" lol. There were some prawns given to us free, and when some of us wanted to cook the damn things, we found that they were alive! A large amount of squealing and noise later, we managed to just dump the stupid thing and cook it. Oh, and there was free ice cream as well, so we were supposed to go over to the counter and present our receipt to collect those "potong" ice creams. Ended up taking extra, I took 1 more, KY took 3? Oh well. Don't know what happened to the extras though.

Went to the arcade to hang out a while after that before going home.

Wednesday, May 03, 2006

Well, I'm now in the thick of exams, which of course sucks since only nerds who study everyday like proving their mettle at tests. One of the implications of blogging during the examination period is having less time for study, but that doesn't really do that much to me, since I don't really study that much at all. I bascially just wasted my whole weekend for studying stoning (and I don't mean the drug-induced version) instead. This, of course means low productivity, which results in poor farming methods which leads to overcultivation and on to environmental degradation. I've just recited most of the "poverty cycle", so you can see that tomorrow's paper is Geography.

Along with Geography tomorrow I have E Maths, of which I might be fked. I dunno for sure yet, but I tend to suck at Math, you see. I've tuition later, let's see if that helps.

No point dwelling on the future, let's get back to the past. Earlier today we had Chinese Language Paper 1, which was composition, and the CL listening comprehension paper immediately after that. I think I'll do quite okay for the compo; the letter possibly okay as well, though it was done totally in a get-it-over-with fashion.

Yesterday we had our Chinese and English Paper 2 (i.e. Comprehension Paper), and amazingly, my CL teacher was able to mark ALL the scripts in my class by yesterday morning. I'm impressed, and apparently she stayed up till 2am. Out of a possible 70 marks, I got a pretty respectable 48, the highest being Xavier with 54. I'm only really disappointed I didn't finish the paper; I'm pretty sure I could have gotten somewhat better marks. Oh well. As for English, I think I did...well I'm cautiously optimistic, but I might not do as well as in the past, since I kinda forgot to go back and do some of the questions properly.

The exam day before yesterday was English Paper 1 (Composiiton), of which I'm quite sure I can do pretty well, except that I'm not too confident on my exposition this time around. Wrote slightly out of point I think.

3 subjects down, 5 more to go. I can't wait till I can taste freedom again.
